Extend Chip Card / Student ID

This guide explains step-by-step how to extend your student ID or chip card each semester. This is the only way for the printed date to remain valid – otherwise, you will lose discounts in the cafeteria and many other places.

ℹ️ 1. Why extend?

With a valid chip card, you benefit from many advantages: Cinemas, museums, and the Ulm Theater (even free with prior registration!) often offer discounts for students.

The same applies in the university cafeteria: Only with a current printout will you receive the student price – otherwise, you pay the more expensive guest rate.

🧭 2. Where can I extend the card?

Extension is only possible at special machines on campus. You can find these at the following locations:

  • 🏛 Mensa entrance (Uni Süd)
  • 🧱 North entrance (near H10)
  • 📚 Library entrance (Uni West)

👉 You will need your chip card and your personal PIN!

🔐 3. How do I find my PIN?

If you have forgotten your PIN, you can retrieve it or generate a new one in the IDM portal.

  1. Go to the 👉 IDM Portal of Ulm University
  2. Log in with your university account and MFA token. → Here you can find out how to set up MFA.
  3. Click on "Chip card" in the left menu.

Now you have two options:

  • A) You have never changed your PIN: Click on "Retrieve data mirror" – there you will find the original PIN in the PDF document.

  • B) You have already changed your PIN: Click on "Generate new PIN". A window with the new PIN will appear. ⚠️ Important: This will only be displayed once and cannot be retrieved afterwards!

🪪 4. Extend card

  1. Insert your chip card with the picture facing up into the machine.
  2. The login screen will appear: Enter your PIN.
  3. Tap "Print and Eject" to have the new validity period printed.
  4. Your card will then be automatically ejected – done!

🧾 5. Other functions of the machines

The chip card machines can do more than just extend: You can also top up your print credit there. A part of your cafeteria credit will be converted into print credit – practical if you regularly print in the university pools.
